Children with disabilities are subjected to more stereotypes, prejudice and stigma leading to discrimination compared to children without disabilities due harmful cultural beliefs and misconceptions about the causes of disability among other factors. When compared with other children, children with disabilities are less likely to receive an education, less likely to be employed as adults.
Less likely to start their own families, and participate in community events, and are more likely to live in poverty (UN, 2018).
Disability has also been associated with long-run poverty as children with disabilities are less likely to acquire the human capital that facilitates their likelihood of higher incomes. Meeting the immediate needs of these children however, cannot break the cycle of poverty. According to the Ugandan Population and Housing Census the total population of all children aged 18 years and below was 57.2% (19,874,000) of the total population.
Children with disabilities are estimated to be 5.82% translating to 2,027,148 (1,052,000 boys and 974,488 girls according to the National Action Plan for Children with Disabilities (Ministry of Gender and Social development).
